Chocolate Marshmallow Pie

Today was showering rain, cool and wet and I felt like having some chocolate.

Chocolate. As I’ve told many of my students, I used to be a chocoholic. Used to be. I used to crave it sometimes, had to, had to, eat some. Now I still love chocolate but the cravings have all but disappeared. I don’t frantically search out chocolate and stuff it into my mouth. But, sometimes I guess I just fall off the wagon.

Today the inspiration for this pie came from a few things on hand in our house. First of all it was a rainy and cool day. Had it been warm and sunny, I don’t think I would have been thinking about chocolate. But the weather made me think of comfort food and chocolate is good for comforting anyone at anytime. We still have a lot of chocolate leftover that was bought to use for Valentine’s baking but was never used. And see? I haven’t used it until now! The last thing that inspired me was a bag of marshmallows I found at the back of a cupboard. The marshmallows are not old, but I haven’t seen the bag for a week or two and finding it today was a surprise.

I did a search for recipes on the internet but none of them fit exactly with what I had in mind, so today’s pie was an experiment. The great thing about experimenting with chocolate is it’s hard to make a mistake. Almost anything you create will taste OK with chocolate in it.

I’m sorry the picture above does not do the pie justice, but to tell you the truth I’d rather spend my time eating and enjoying the food with my family than playing around with the food and a camera. From the picture I’m sure you can tell it’s a chocolate pie and tastes fantastic. In fact, the pie situation can be summed up with the poem from Shel Silverstein called Pie Problem.

Pie ProblemIf I eat one more pie, i'll DIE!If I can't have one more piece of pie, i'll DIE!so since it's all decided I must have one more piece of pie.Mmmm-Oooh-MY!Chomp - Gulp - Bye.

My wife and I are pretty good parents so luckily no one died tonight during the pie eating. But be careful if you make this pie, because it’s that good!
