I see(d) you.

My daughter and I planted some seeds today.

This is one of my little garden plots. We have about a one meter space between our house and our neighbour’s house on one side. Originally we tried to grow grass along this strip of land. Unfortunately, cats from various neighbours and homeless cats used our property for disposing of their bodily wastes. Often they would dig up the newly sodded grass and thereby kill the grass. I continued to try and grow grass, putting more sod, lots of grass seed and various items to keep the cats out. Well, the cats still came occasionally and the weeds came in real well. Eventually I decided to put a test plot on one area to see if anything would grow as there is a lot of shade on this side of the house. You know what? Things grew great!

Recently, a good friend of ours, the carpenter who built our house moved back to Canada (you’re missed, but good luck with everything back in Canada). I took some cuttings from his raspberries. Unfortunately, this new garden plot wasn’t good enough for the raspberries and they withered and died. I will try again. You can see their remains on top of the soil.

Until I plant more raspberries, I decided to go crazy with some of the various seeds we have. Over the years I’ve collected various flower, herb and vegetable seeds from Japan, Canada and Britain (mail-order). My younger daughter and I picked many different packs of seeds and threw them hither and thither into the soil.

I should also mention that we do a lot of composting. So, the soil seen above is actually a lot of compost mixed with some regular potting soil. Why do I mention this? Well, my compost contains a lot of seeds and material for starting new plants. Whenever we mix our compost into our gardens we wind up with all sorts of plants popping up. It takes a while before we know whether the leaves popping up are a weed or a tomato/potato/lemon/herb. Fun, fun, fun!

We had fun mixing in the seeds and then watering it. My wife however thinks it’s a waste of time and seeds. Wait and see. She may be right, but I prefer playing, having fun and maybe, just maybe growing something on this little piece of land that until recently had nothing but a little grass, cat do-dos, and weeds. Play on! (Good luck, plants!)
