Christmas has many traditions, but one that I like to share with my younger students is the joy of making cookies.

Younger students at our school make 2 different kinds of cookies on the last day of the year, traditionally just before Christmas. They decorate cookies and then at the end of the lesson, they take their cookies home to share with their family, or just enjoy by themselves.

I never made cookies when I was young, but I always enjoyed tasting a new batch of cookies. My mother made a variety of cookies and baked treats throughout the year, but at Christmas time there was much more to sample.

Those students at our school who come year after year improve their skills. By the end of elementary school, students are not only good at making cookies, but seem comfortable in the kitchen. Thus, the students not only learn about a cultural activity, but they also learn a life skill that in a small way will help them in their future.

I hope everyone enjoyed their cookies, both making and eating, as I enjoyed doing this activity with them.
