Figs

This is the last of our figs from our tree.

(Figs!)When I was a child and I made my mother mad, a common response made by my mother during her rant would be the rhetorical question, ‘Do you know what you’re going to get? Do you? (Figs! - this would be said in Ukrainian) That’s what you’ll get!’My brothers and I came to fear those words. What did it all mean? This word she used when she was mad was not understood by us, but due to the fact she was angry it must have meant something bad.Years later, as adults talking with my mother one day we asked about the dreaded ‘(Figs!)’ This was when she explained that it meant ‘figs’. We were understandably confused. Why did she tell us, when she was angry, that we would get figs???She laughed and explained that her mother had said that to her and she didn’t understand it either, but if it worked for her mother (mind you, when her mother said it in Ukrainian, my mother understood the word, but she still didn’t understand why she’d get figs) it would work for her.Today we picked the last of the figs off of our tree. It was a wee tree, yes, but this year for the first time it provided us with a handful of fruit, and for that we are grateful.Go forth and do good with your life or else, do you know what you’re going to get? (Figs!)
