National Apple Pie Day!

When the Lord gives you apples, one thing you can do is make some apple pie.

Sorry for the misleading title. A quick Google search shows that May 13th is the National Pie Day in the United States.

However, as I live in Japan and seeing that there is no National Pie Day here, let it be proclaimed that today, January 5th, 2014 is hereby designated as National Pie Day. Sorry for my late announcement of such an important event. Good luck to all next year!

The recipe for the pie filling and crust can be found at the Serious Eats site. The author of the recipe, J. Kenji López-Alt, is a great food writer and his recipes always are good, nay great.

The pie was/is delicious (we haven’t finished it all yet) and this recipe will be a keeper. The crust is flaky and tastes great plus it was easy to make. The apple filling stayed solid, not mushy and the flavour of the apples stayed strong rather than being over-powered by spices or the crust.

It’s nice going to bed knowing there’s apple pie for snacking on during the night, should one become peckish or awaiting one for delicious and quick breakfast (and healthy - it has apples in it!)
