What's on the Menu? Grilled Sardines

Fish was fresh at the market today, so that became the focus for tonight's dinner.

I love grilling food. As does Muffin, our dog. The smells must be incredible for him, plus he gets the odd chunk of food off of the grill as a favour for his special 'BBQ guard duty' while we do grilling. Thanks to his efforts, so far no-one has yet come off the street to steal food from our BBQ.As much as I like to BBQ meat (or anything for that matter), I enjoy BBQ-ing fish whenever possible. One of the fish I especially like to grill is イワシ/sardines.The first time I had grilled sardines was many a moon ago at the Folkorama Festival in my hometown of Winnipeg.I can remember being so surprised, because up to that point in my life I didn't care for sardines, and sardines were a canned fish that some people (not me) ate in sandwiches. To this day I can remember the smokey, BBQ-y, oily, sardine that I bought, and how delicious it was. This morning, during our weekly shopping we found fresh sardines for sale at a local supermarket. I immediately thought of those sardines from years ago and suggested that we buy them for dinner. The weather was rainy in the morning, but after the rain it was partly cloudy. My wife wondered if it would be OK to use the BBQ today. Once I committed to BBQ-ing the sardines, weather be damned I was going to BBQ them.In the end, the weather held all afternoon and evening. I added some smoke chips to the BBQ, and grilled the sardines on low heat over the charcoal. The sardines were smaller than the ones I remember and because of my use of smoking wood chips tasted different. But the sardines were delicious. Smokey, salty, and full of umami.Dinner was good. Now, what will we have tomorrow?
