My December Garden

What's happening in your garden at this time of year? Here's what's happening at our house.

It's December, 2018 already!! Time flies when you're having fun.

This morning was nice, not so cold, and the sun was slowly rising. A quick look outside while I was having breakfast (after my morning walk) showed me how much green we still have in December. So, I quickly popped outside and took this pic.

Our house is on the left. Straight ahead, you can see wood stacked up in the wood shed I re-built last year. On the left, you can also see the stairs I built so that we can exit from the back of our house. On the right side is my neighbor's house (pretty close, isn't it?).

I did away with a garden solely on the ground due to neighborhood cats that would come in and do naughty things in the garden. I was not amused, and changed to using raised garden beds. Each one is smaller than what we had, and even combined it's smaller than what we had. However, we can still grow plenty of things, it is easier to weed and take care of, and it gives us more room for other things.

The grass is coming along pretty good. I've used a lot of seed, both Japanese and Canadian. There are still weeds here and there, but compared to a year ago, it's doing great. Hopefully it will be nice in the spring as well. Cross your fingers.

In the raised garden bed on the left, we still have basil growing, arugula, green onions, and sorrel. There is also a squash or pumpkin plant growing that started inside the raised bed, then spilled onto the lawn. It started growing in September and has a few tiny fruit growing, but I don't think we'll get much out of it this year. It's relative over my fence did better and we harvested a nice-sized squash/pumpkin (not sure which) recently that was tasty.

On the right side, in the raised bed in the foreground, there is garlic chives, kale and Swiss chard growing. In front of that bed, there are jalapeños, basil, and dill growing in pots or bags of soil. The last raised bed, at the back on the right side has kale again, Swiss chard, and chives.

The olive trees behind the stairs are green and will stay that way all winter, are doing well. But this year we had no olives to harvest. Maybe it was too hot (it was a really hot summer). Our tree at the back, in front of the wood shed will keep most of the leaves all winter, but will not sprout any new ones until the spring. Each fall I trim this tree, and the olives, trimming about one meter of growth from the olives, and about 2 meters worth from the other one.

Also growing but not seen is mint, rosemary, bay laurel, thyme, and others I fail to remember at this time. All in all, things are nice and green, especially for December. It's nice to have things we can harvest all through the year.

How about where you live? What's it like now? Is anything growing outside? Let me know.
