Hole-y Cow.

I noticed something interesting on one of my morning walks.

This is a section of raised highway that passes through our town.

What caught my eye is the strange number of holes drilled into the concrete support column.

There appears to be no pattern to the holes and on each column the pattern of holes is different. I don’t know if this is random drillings or some set plan for the holes, but it makes no sense to me.

Are the holes made so as to insert something to make the columns stronger? But if that’s the case, why weren’t they made stronger to begin with? Why is the pattern of holes not standard, but rather random? Do all columns need holes in them? If there was an earthquake, would the holes currently in the columns weaken the column?

Lots of questions, no answers. Hopefully this is not a dangerous situation and my imagination is running away. Hopefully.
