Shaving - it’s something that many of us do, often daily.If done daily, the cost of the shaving cream and razors, plus any extra creams bought for after shaving can add up to a lot of money per year.Last year I wrote about going retro with my shaving habits by not using pre-made shaving cream, but instead using a shaving brush and shaving soap to make my own shaving cream.I’ve continued on that journey and over one year later I still enjoy using the shaving brush and shaving soap.Looking into the prices of shaving cream, I’ve found that the cheapest shaving cream (excluding that which may be sold at the Dollar store, or in Japan, the ¥100 stores) seems to cost about ¥380 (about $3.80 CDN).Given the cost of the shaving soap I use lasts about 10 months for about ¥2000 (about $20 CDN) and a can of shaving cream would last me about 2 months, I assert that the costs for both formats of shaving cream are almost equal.One difference between the 2 formats is the amount of garbage produced. The shaving soap lasts for 10 months and uses only one container. The cans of shaving foam would number 5 in total and would amount to more garbage.Another big difference is in quality. I compared the cheapest shaving cream with the shaving soap I use. Cheap shaving creams are not nice for your skin over extended periods in my experience. Higher priced shaving creams provide more additives to help your skin feel better, but this costs more. The shaving soap I use is nice for your skin and doesn’t cost any more money.Having used shaving soap for years in Canada before coming to Japan I know that I enjoy using the shaving soap, it is easy to use, it isn’t expensive, my skin feels better, and it’s good for the environment. The reason I quit using it was that I could not easily get shaving soap for many years after I came to Japan. However, recently it again has become easy for my to buy this product and so I’ve started using it again.If you still aren’t using shaving soap and a brush, I have to ask why? Aren’t you worth it? Isn’t the environment worth it? Isn’t your pocketbook worth it?
