Kushikatsu/串カツ

Dinner tonight was kushikatsu, which are bite-sized pieces of food on sticks, deep-fried.

One of my favourite foods to eat in a restaurant here in Japan is kushikatsu/串カツ.I think kushikatsu may not be as popular as sushi, sashimi or ramen is outside of Japan. Even in Japan I think it is not one of the major foods people eat. At home, it can be a little labour intensive if you want to have a large selection of foods, and at restaurants it can be expensive at times. The food is all bite-sized, so in one or two bites, it’s finished. Also because there are so many different types of food to eat, I can enjoy many types of food. You might have a bite of fish now, and next some vegetable, and next some meat and so on.In the picture you can see fried golden chunks of chicken with shiso. These skewers required more than one bite, but each bite rewarded you with juicy chicken and bits of shiso leaves.Altogether I had somewhere around 15 skewers of food. As each food was done separately, we could slowly enjoy the meal and each new round of skewers offered up different tastes. The next time you want to have some Japanese food, why not try some kushikatsu?
