Getting ready for White Day

Today I made some marshmallows for White Day.

Here they are. I know they don’t look like much, but a lot of time and effort went into their making and I think they taste pretty good.

In Japan as you may or may not know, March 14th is White Day. Valentine’s Day on February 14th is often celebrated in Japan with females giving chocolates or sweets to males. I think this can be a lot of pressure on females thinking they should give something to males for this celebration. In turn, males who receive chocolates or sweets are supposed to return the favour one month later, on March 14th. The stores really push the February 14th celebration with chocolate of all kinds on sale all over Japan in every kind of store. One month later, there are some items for sale to celebrate White Day, but the amount is very small in comparison with Valentine’s Day.

I have been fortunate over the years to receive chocolates and sweets from some students on Valentine’s Day, and I do my best to show my appreciation one month later on White Day. In recent years this has been expressed through my making and giving of marshmallows.

This year I decided on trying two new flavours which I had not made until today. The first, pictured above and on the left is Naruto sweet potato pie flavoured marshmallows. My sweet potato pie is pretty good. I’ve taken that flavour concept and incorporated it into the marshmallows. I can be pretty certain that no one else in Naruto or Japan makes sweet potato marshmallows.

The second flavour, pictured above on the right is blueberry flavoured. Blueberry may not be very original, but for me it’s something new.

I’ll start giving out my marshmallows this week to those individuals with whom I’m indebted, and I’ll give my thanks. Happy White Day!
