A Little Slice of Heaven

I'm enjoying the weekend.

Word games. Crosswords, Scrabble, Word searches, Jumbles, Sudoku (not a word game, but in the same group I think) are all things I like to do.As a kid, I can remember sitting with the weekend paper and trying to find all the words in the giant word searches. As an adult, I remember starting to do crosswords and how long it took and I how bad I was. I'm still bad at some crosswords, and I'm hopeless at cryptic crosswords - but it's still fun to try. I didn't start to do Sudoku until I came to Japan (it started here). I remember my father-in-law doing them and thinking that they were so difficult. After a couple of years of watching him, I started also doing them and, yes, at times they were difficult. Many of these puzzles can be found in newspapers, but generally they can be difficult to find in Japanese newspapers. In some Japanese newspapers, crosswords can be found once a week (twice if lucky), and same with sudoku. Entertainment of this sort, including comics is very limited. Newspapers over here tend to have news and advertising. Entertainment can be found elsewhere, or better yet, MUST be found elsewhere. From time to time, I will get newspapers or newspaper clippings from Canada that is the crosswords, word puzzles, comics, or sudoku from the paper. I treasure these!!! They are a gift from heaven for me. Not only do I get to do a puzzle of some sort, but the other side of the paper will have some tidbit of news from abroad, whether it is an obituary, sales advertisement, or piece of news.Announcement to anyone from abroad reading this blog: should you have finished your newspaper and have no further need of it, why not recycle it by sending it to me, care of my school (address is found on our homepage).Sending your old newspapers to me will help the environment because we will be recycling and reusing the product, and I will get a chance to do more puzzles! Don't let your old newspapers stack up and collect dust, or worse, be thrown in the landfill. Send them off to a better home where they will be appreciated, and I will have another slice, of heaven.
