Indigo Dyeing (藍染め) at Studiio N2

On the weekend we went to do some indigo dying.

First of all, I must apologize for only having one picture. Terrible person that I am, I tend to get absorbed in what I am doing, what I am eating, who I am talking to or what I am watching. I often focus on the here and now. Unfortunately, this means that I am usually not an individual that is constantly snapping pictures in many social or personal situations. I had such a good time during my weekend outing, that little did I think of using a camera to take pictures.

We visited Studio N2 in Naruto, Japan (where I happen to live). The studio started this year, I believe they said, and is not too far from my home.

Inside the studio, our 2 hour session began with a history and lesson about indigo dyeing (藍染め).

We learned about how the dye is formed and kept, and we learned about how the dye interacts with cloth.

Detailed instructions were given, and many examples of dyeing were shown to us, so that we could decide how we would do our dyeing.

We decided to dye handkerchiefs and set about creating our designs.

Then the dyeing process began, during which we enjoyed various discussions with our instructors.

At last, the dyeing was finished. (I could say that we were dying to see our dyeing, but that wouldn't be good, would it?)

Our designs looked great, and the experience was fantastic. The time seemed to pass in a flash and I can't thank the staff enough for such a great time.

Should you find yourself in Naruto, Japan and wish to partake in a unique and thoroughly enjoyable experience, please visit Studio N2.
