Jaws, Covid-19 & the Olympics

There is a common thread that runs through the movie Jaws, the infection Covid-19, and the Olympics.

Last night was 'movie night' for my family. It's an event we sometimes do, usually on a weekend, where we eat dinner while watching a movie together. The movie we watched last night was Steven Spielberg's Jaws. The first time I saw the movie, my 12-year old self watched most of the movie. A testament of the skill of this movie is that even though there were a number of scenes my 12-year old self did not watch, the movie was tremendously enjoyable, scary, and entertaining. This time, I watched the whole movie.

After all those years, Jaws is still a well made movie in my opinion. The acting is good, the story is good, and the special effects are good. The movie doesn't hold the same impact on me now, but the world has changed, and my knowledge of things has increased.

A striking moment for me happened in the movie when a couple of shark attacks had occurred. Authorities want to close the beaches to protect citizens. However, political forces are unhappy, saying it will not be good for the economy.

This led to me think about the situation with Covid-19, and more recently the Olympics that are to be held shortly here in Japan, in July 2021. Just like in the movie Jaws, while some individuals are worried about the health of citizens, others in power focus mostly on the economy.

In the movie Jaws, did people want to go swimming, use the beach, go sailing? Of course they did. But it was unsafe. Professionals wanted to keep citizens safe.

During this Covid-19 crisis, did people want to gather in groups, have parties, live normally? Of course they do. But it is unsafe. Professionals want to keep citizens safe.

In the run-up to the Olympics here in Japan, do athletes want to compete, do individuals want to come see and cheer, does the world want to take part in an international event? Of course they do. But it is unsafe. Professionals want to keep citizens safe.

Money is not the only important thing in life.

In the movie Jaws, political forces were overturned for the safety of the citizens. In the end, the danger was removed. For the sake of us all, I hope the same will happen now.
