Salt & Vinegar Chickpeas

I recently came across this Salt & Vinegar snack and I knew I had to give it a try.

I grew up eating Salt & Vinegar snacks, so whenever I see the words “salt & vinegar” together I pay attention.

Recently I came across Baylie Martin’s blog about Salt & Vinegar chickpeas and I quickly bookmarked the recipe.

Unlike Baylie, I’ve always liked Salt & Vinegar.

Here in Japan, it is rare that I come across any products that are seasoned as Salt & Vinegar. There are a lot of snacks in Japan that are Salt-flavoured, but to me snacks should ALWAYS have salt on them, PLUS some other seasoning.

As a child growing up, plain potato chips (a.k.a. ‘Salt-flavoured’) were the lowest level of potato chips I could be given. In some cases, when give said plain potato chips I would add vinegar to the bag of chips to give them some sourness. Yes, they became soggy, but at least they had some taste!

Usually we have a can or two of chickpeas in the house, and we always have lots of vinegar so this recipe gets bonus points for its simplicity.

Rather than making the full recipe with 2 cans of chickpeas I made a half-version of the recipe.

The recipe was easy and I was completely finished in under an hour, with very little hands-on time for the recipe.

How do they taste? Testing, testing, one, two, three, small handful,...

I’m thinking they might go good with beer. Wait one minute ....

Aahhh! Yes, they do. They do go well with beer. But fear not, as they are just as wonderful without the beer or with some other beverage.

Mine are basically all gone now, so I’ll have to whip up another batch.

Give it a try. And let me know if you see any other Salt & Vinegar recipes.
