Fig Newtons

Figs. I love them fresh. I love them dried. l’d love them even if they were fried. But today, I didn’t fry any figs. Instead, I made some cookies.

Today I decided to try my hand at making Fig Newtons.

‘Why would any one want to make them?’ you may be asking. I can’t give you any definitive answer for that question, sorry.

I love figs. They are probably not my favourite fruit, but I do love them. Recently I’ve been able to find dried figs for a reasonable price. I’ve been snacking on them and adding them to yogurt. Over time, I’ve been thinking of Fig Newtons, probably because they’re made with figs and also because I can’t buy them here in Japan.

After searching for recipes on the internet, I finally decided on a recipe to follow. The ingredients seemed clear enough and the pictures posted with the recipe helped me to figure out how to make them.

The cookie dough was easy to make but then it rests in a cold place for 2 hours. The cookie filling was easy to make, but takes about 2 hours to cook. Slow but easy is how it went.

In the end, I was rewarded with soft cookies with a sweet, fig-gy filling and both cookies and filling have a touch of orange zest that gives them a nice smell and taste. My cookie box is was full of cookies. The cookies, I’ve read, should be even better (hard to believe) tomorrow. Let’s see how long they’ll last, shall we?
