Chewy Dulce de Leche Squares

Scarily good, dangerously delicious, agonizingly calorific. Make them. Trust me.

This recipe from Canadian Living magazine passed by my eyes recently, and I knew I had to make it.

I would need to pick up a few ingredients, but nothing was that difficult to get. Except for the main component in the recipe, dulce de leche. If you've never heard of dulce de leche before, or ever seen it, this is not a problem.

As far as I understand it, dulce de leche is the result of cooking sweetened condensed milk until it is golden and caramel-like. Often this can be done by taking a can of condensed milk, putting it in a pot, covering the can with water, and gently cooking it for 30-45 minutes, then carefully opening the can.

Some lucky individuals can buy dulce de leche ready-made at stores. Not so for me, so I must make it when I want it.

For this recipe, I needed more than one can's worth of dulce de leche, because the cans I can buy are a little small.

I put condensed milk in a pot and slowly cooked it for about 20 minutes. Unfortunately, it didn't have enough caramel flavor for me, so I quickly made a small amount of caramel, added it into the dulce de leche, and my mixture was ready.

The recipe doesn't have many ingredients, and comes together fairly quickly. It baked nicely and was difficult not to test when it came immediately out of the oven.

Good things come to those who wait, because these squares taste fantastic; gooey, chewy, chocolatey sweet goodness in every bite.

Highly recommended, please give this recipe a try.
