In Hot Water, But It's OK (EcoCute)

Are recent change from using propane gas and electricity to only electricity meant changing how we heat our water. Our new system saves us money.

Our old system for getting hot water involved using large propane tanks (2) and a water heater, pictured above on the left. The gas tanks were on the opposite side of the house, outside of our kitchen. Somehow the gas was connected to a heater inside the cabinet pictured and the water was re-directed back into the house, going back to the kitchen on the first floor and upstairs to the bath on the second floor. There was no water tank, so the hot water was produced on demand. We found that we were paying a lot of money for both gas and electricity every month, and this led to our move away from gas. We liked using gas, both for heating the water and for cooking, but the costs in recent years were just too much. I referred to this a little while back, talking about our house and about our cooking changes. We have switched to using an EcoCute system for our hot water needs. I don’t understand all the information about this system, but I know that it is supposed to cost us less money each month. Supposedly, lots less money. We’ve only had the system going for a short time so far, thus I can’t comment on the costs just yet. Once we start getting our bills we’ll be able to confirm or reject this claim. The EcoCute system uses less energy to heat water and comes with a water tank. We have control panels both downstairs in the kitchen and upstairs in the bath that allow us control over a wide assortment of features, including providing us with information about how much water is always in the water tank. We’ve found that the water pressure with this system is lower than it was with the gas heater, but this may be due to how our house was designed. Had we put this system in when we built our house, the routes for the water pipes may have changed to better accommodate this system. That said, the water pressure is much higher than what we’ve often experienced in hotels in various countries. The water pressure is lower than it was, but not terrible. On the plus side, when taking a bath the water seems to feel softer. I can’t describe it well, but the water somehow feels nicer from this system. As we gather more experience with the EcoCute system, I’ll report back with the findings. For now, let’s just say that we’re in hot water and we like it!
