Taking the ferry to work.

I cycled to work yesterday, taking the ferry for part of the journey.

As the weather was nice yesterday, I decided to cycle to work. I teach a couple of classes at Naruto University of Education on Tuesdays. The university is a 15 minute car ride from my house, and roughly the same amount of time is needed to go by bicycle. But with good weather it’s nice to ride my bike whenever possible.

Naruto University of Education is located on Takashima Island which is accessed either by one of two bridges from Naruto city or by ferry. The bridges are quite high and hard to cycle over so I prefer the ferry. And did I mention that the ferry is free?

It takes me less that 10 minutes to cycle to the ferry dock from my house. Then it takes about 1 minute to cross the channel. Yes, 1 minute!! Once across, it takes 3-4 minutes to cycle to the university.

The picture above was taken on my trip back home. People wait at the end of the pier for the ferry. If you look closely, the boat is on the other side of the channel straight in front of the pier. Some of the passengers are pedestrians, but many are cyclists of all ages.

If you ever visit Naruto, remember to take a free ferry ride to Takashima. It’s a quick trip, but it’s still fun to be on the sea!
